Alice Skye visits Banff, Canada
VMDO was delighted to support Alice Skye on her recent trip to Banff, Canada to take part in the Wîchoîe Ahiya Singer-Songwriter Fall Program.
The Wergaia and Wemba Wemba artist was one of ten invited to the program, alongside First Nations writers from the US, Taiwan and Canada itself. As well as access to her own studio, equipped for both writing and recording, the program afforded Alice the opportunity to listen to, learn from, educate and collaborate with the cohort of intergenerational musicians, celebrating both their differences and their common experiences.
According to Alice, the main outcomes have been an increased understanding of global opportunities for First Nations artists (grants, festivals), discussions on cultural safety, and workshops on field recording and sampling. As well as this, of course, the opportunity to record in a geographically remote and inspiring location, far from the distractions of home was a luxury, and Alice came away with a song she intends to be the title track of her next album.
We’re really looking forward to hearing it.
