VMDO Networking Breakfasts - Tactical & Practical Career Planning

Published 16 June, 2021

VMDO & Music Victoria present a free, interactive workshop, exploring strategies for portfolio careers and freelancing within the music industry.

Whether you're thriving or just surviving in your career, it's always the right time to evaluate where you're going and why you're going there.

Portfolio careers and freelancing are a way of life in the music industry, however this career model can be reactive, unpredictable and highly dependent on external forces. Equally, a portfolio career model can allow for greater freedom and flexibility, which interviewees discussed in VMDO & RMIT's report: Career Paths: The Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle. As we navigate post-COVID and COVID-normal, we have an opportunity to evaluate our involvement in the industry and how that meets our needs.

This workshop will step you through a framework to build control, make proactive choices and implement a strategy for financial and creative sustainability.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the value and purpose of strategy over a reactive model for career planning

  • Articulate individual needs and preferences for a career model in order to make strategic choices for career planning

  • Articulate detailed next steps in researching or actively pursuing changes to career models
